Symphony 2 Beta Release

If you thought Symphony 2 beta would be released tomorrow, you’re wrong and you owe me a dollar.

When the elders of an ancient forgotten tribe played with their rain sticks to see if their year-long drought would be graced with rain this season, they’ve made a misstep in their ritual dance and accidentally foretold that Symphony 2 beta would arrive today - and it was true.

We thought this day would never happen

The perfectionists that we are, the team had gone through a gruelling 7 months of deep, deep development. When the team started Symphony 2, we knew this was going to be what we’ve always wanted Symphony to be but because of it, Symphony 2 became our lust, our dream and our object of desire and at the same time our nightmare, our stress and our source of many kinds of deprivation (many kinds indeed).

You thought this day would never happen

We originally said we’d try for an August release. August became September, then November and then December. The boy cried wolf just three times before he lost his credibility, we had to push that envelope to 5 times. I guess you lot didn’t stop believing because we didn’t just cry; we practically yelled, kicking, screaming and poked a few of you. Thanks a bunch for sticking around.

My own mother didn’t think this day would happen

Despite the fact that my mum thinks I probably make sandwiches online and I’m deep in some digital bread research, she never thought I’d call her and finally say that I’m sorry that I didn’t call more often for the past few months. Mums are cool, they don’t care what you do - they’ll support you anyway.

Your pet chicken probably thinks I’m crazy

Releasing the beta is only the first step of many big ones to come. Bug and polish aside - neither of which is my job (hurray!) - we have a slew of Ensembles (in Symphony 1.7 speak: “Workspaces”) and Extensions (Campfire Services) to do, a series of Symphony related developer services (both paid and free) and also a giant robot space monkey to build. No rest for the wicked, they say.

Since I’m not wicked or a super hero fighting crime, I be off to sleep. You lot, have fun with the beta. Remember, it’s beta bugs are bound to happen, make sure you let us know about them

Discussions

Okay, for those holding out on comments all these months, this is the time for you to shine.

Almost-guaranteed discussion of intrigue

A hearty congrats…

Michael Eichelsdörfer 24 January 08

Hooray! Congratulations! I am sure you did a great job.

Nick Toye 24 January 08

Err, is there a link? :)

Or do I need to go to Overture?

Allen 24 January 08

Head over to the first thread on the Overture forum. The discussion has instructions on how to obtain Symphony 2 beta and more information surrounding the release.

Nick Toye 24 January 08

Will do.

Although I am not on my own computer so I can’t download it yet. Typical. :)

A man walked into a bar and talked to the barkeep about his new “Lazer.” The bar keep, stared confusely and wondered if he should get his tazer. You see, all that the barkeep wanted to do is finish his shift, go home, and enjoy a night of Symphony 2.0 beta – the long awaited 2.0. The barkeep pours his chaotic buds a cold one.

Allen 24 January 08

Oh my, I misspelt laser! That deprivation thing I mentioned on the article. Is the root of all evil! Well, let’s keep the wordfest going with the misspelt word anyway.

A man walked into a bar, and shot ibolmo with a Lazer for using seven-letter words.

Congratulations on S2!

Justin (plasticine) 24 January 08

Well done guys… Seriously, congratulations are well in order!

:)

Ann 24 January 08

Congratulations!!

Fyorl 24 January 08

Thank God for that, our food supply was running really low. I had to start eating Ben’s hair.

Allen 24 January 08

Haha. Apologies for that Fyorl, When development cycles are run on passion, the bar becomes this high (yeah, that high). You know how it is ;)

River Jiang 24 January 08

Congratulations to you and the rest of the Symphony team! I can’t wait to play with the 2.0 beta … as soon as my exams are over. :P (Just when I decided to stop procrastinating, the greatest roadblock of all falls thundering down in front of me! I’m never going to be able to study now… :P)

(As a side note though, my pet chickens happened to be insanely cunning—in the ways of the elders of the ancient tribe in question, they too predicted this day. Unfortunately, on top of being insanely cunning, they are also insanely insane, so no one listened to them.)

Its good to see the team still going strong, I always knew that Symphony would be the platform to develop on in the future. Great job as always to the 21 team. I will be making more time to come back to the forum

A man walked into a bar and his good friend Lazer told me that I was a classy fellow and I should check out this new Symphony Orchestra at the auditorium next door. The orchestra call themselves, “2 Beta”. It was the best day ever.

Brian Z 24 January 08

A man walked into a bar to check out his pal’s new Lazer, but then spies the beta of a really cool web publishing system! Forget the Lazer … it’s time to beta test.

Allen 25 January 08

There’s a bug in my wordfest award icons…dang.

William 25 January 08

I noticed and felt cheated. Looks like you’ve fixed it now?

Kirk 26 January 08

Congratulations to everyone involved. I know how seriously you guys take development so I’m sure it’s really paid off.

A man walked into a bar moving nonchalantly. Shocking would be his surprise when the clerk directed a ‘Lazer’ (just like Dr. Evil’s) to his head and told him to dance! He was lucky to have a copy of the new Symphony 2 Beta in his pocket; the ‘lazer’ was no match.

How I would love to read up on the strides that are been taking to prepare RC1…

A man walked into a bar and asked for a Lazer beer. But, he got Symphony 2 Beta instead. Once I get better with Symphony, I’d give it a spin!

A man walked into a bar screaming, “Symphony, damn it! I must have it!” as he waved his lazer pointing and and laughing at people as if he were going to shoot. “Where is the one they call Alistair Allen Scott?” (look, just shoot me now!)
