Chaotic PatternExclusively Symphony, straight from the source

Developer’s Chat Podcast #1

If listening to a couple of developer geeks chatting about Symphony for 20 solid minutes is your thing, then this podcast is for you.

Hello and welcome to the developer’s chat edition of the Chaotic Pattern podcast. This is your host, Allen Chang and with me is Symphony system engineer, Alistair Kearney.

The whole transcript below is only half of one-third of a quarter segment in the podcast, listen to the podcast for the whole full thing!

Introduction

Allen C.
So, just to get ourselves started, why don’t you tell the listeners what the “developer’s chat edition” entail?
Alistair K.
Well this is something we hope to do more often. We’d talk about various things that’s happening on Overture, any important highlights of Symphony’s development and other progress we’re making. Something just to give a more interesting overview of Symphony in general.
Allen C.
Yeah, we’re gonna do it, biweekly aren’t we?
Alistair K.
Not biweekly, probably more likely to be fortnightly. Because I don’t think there’s enough happens… [snickers]
Allen C.
[Embarrassed] Well, “fortnightly” was what I meant… anyway, so we’re going to do a couple of segments, “News and Announcements” segment, which we talk about all the new things that’s happening on Overture and Symphony. We’ll have a segment, “Debates, Opinions and Explanations” regarding some of the threads that’s been happening and any highlights throughout the weeks.

On Symphony Beta

Allen C.
The next big announcement is obviously to do with Symphony version 1.8. I’ll let Alistair talk a little bit about what’s happening with that.
Alistair K.
We’re still developing, finishing off some of the new features and improvements - couple of which are still under wraps. So we won’t discuss them today. However, one thing we will announce is the Symphony beta period, which we’re hoping to be for a couple of weeks long. It will give everyone a chance try it out and potentially port their existing sites over on to a test environment to give us a bit of feedback. It’s quite important because version 1.8 is such a large change and there will be a lot of structural changes taking place that should be explored before jumping on to a full production environment.

Discussion

Confused by the terms biweekly and fortnightly too? According to wikipedia, I was correct!

Almost-guaranteed discussion of intrigue

Not so long ago, I said biweekly, meaning fortnightly, and both you and Scott told me I was wrong, saying it meant twice a week. ;) http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/biweekly/. *Karate Chop!*

Lets just say we were both right. lol.

Nice to hear you guys ‘in person’. So just out of curiosity; do you use an IDE, like phpeclipse, for developing your php, or just the plain old textmate (or textedit lol)?

Allen and Alistair -

Great podcast! I’m really excited for Symphony 1.8 and would love to test the beta whenever it is available. I’m looking forward to new screencasts. That will be awesome! To be honest, those screencasts have been huge for my development and understanding how to utilize Symphony…. and understand XSLT.

Also, thanks so much for the kind words. It’s really humbling to hear your name being mentioned on a podcast. Oh by the way Allen, to answer your question, my last name is pronounced Zur-ang (ue is silent). The name is a cajun last name (from South Louisiana) where my parents are from.

My paws are rubbing together awaiting the release of 1.8.

I agree with the comment above about hearing you lot in person. It shows that none of you are a wild animal ready to go berserk on your users, you all seemed quite subdued :D

I’ll look forward to next instalment of the podcast and some more news on 1.8.

Bob 22 July 07

Hmm… i thought i did the wordfest thing right… oh well… :)

Allen 22 July 07

The lack of space after [wordfest] threw the XSLT off. I have to update it to check for that. Meanwhile, I’ve fixed your comment. Apologies.

My paws are tired as I have spent the last week recovering from a hard drive failure. However, getting the chance to listen in on your thoughts on the development of Symphony was great. Your drive and enthusiasm is apparent and I know that Symphony has the right minds driving it forward.

I don’t fault you for the decisions and setbacks that you’ve encountered thus far. In fact, I admire and learn from your experience as I feel I would have made the same mistakes (and more). The evolution of Symphony aside, you guys come across as genuine and “what you see [hear | read] is what you get” than the majority of web professionals.

I hope this developer podcast continues.
